SEO Lies At Small Business Meeting
Wow… where to start! Recently I attended a Business meeting group in Perth. They usually have speakers from all walks of life and business. Accountants – talking about tax and how to work your money. Lawyers – talking about different aspects of protecting yourself in business.
I specifically choose to attend this particular meeting as there was an important guest speaker talking about SEO and Internet Marketing for local businesses.
I thought this could be interesting and I could get one of the two:
At The Meeting With Our Guru
First this guy was introduced as the Go-To Expert in Internet Marketing. He runs a big SEO company in Sydney and had specifically come to Perth to talk.
Wow… a big shot from Sydney!
This guy comes on stage and introduces himself as the Internet Marketing and SEO Guru for Local Businesses! Are you serious? Common, calling yourself a GURU!
I hate that word anyways!
Right from that point it was clear what kind of presentation this would be.
So he continued to tell us more about himself and how he has offices all around Australia. Now he was starting an office in London. Impressive! He continued to talk himself up for about 20 minutes. Ok, I can listen to BS for a little while for amusement. But 20 min of self promotion was just bit too much.
His opening was: “Is anyone here in the business of Internet Marketing and SEO Services? I would like to know, as if you are familiar with the basics I won’t bore you with them”
Of course he was fishing to see how much BS he can spill and sell.
He proceeded to cover few topics on SEO. One of them was: “Submitting Your Website To Over 2000 Search Engines”. Is this guy freaking serious? Then he picked a lady that was sitting in the front row. She had her confused face on, and he asked: “To how many search engines have you submitted your website?” The lady still confused didn’t know what to say. The he proceeded to say that it can take weeks to do and that it needs to be done right so the search engines don’t panelise your website.
What a (&*^%^… His tactic was to confuse and scare business owners who don’t have a clue about Internet Marketing and SEO and then tell them that they are lucky as he is here to help.
He used some big SEO relating words that the average business owner would not have a clue about. Talking rubbish and confusing people.
At this point my blood was boiling inside me. All I wanted is to stand up and tell him how much BS is coming out of his mouth.
At the end he asked if anyone had any questions. A gentleman stood up….
(At that time I realised that it was one of the local business owners who I have exchanged services with. I did SEO for his website and he painted my bike. This guy was interested in SEO ever since and calls me from time to time for some advice.)
…Back to the story. As our SEO Guru asked if anyone had any questions this gentleman stood up and said: “I have been working with a SEO guy for about 2 years now and have been learning ever since. What you said tonight, especially about search engine submission is a pile of cr#p. We are not in 1999.”
Wow… I really didn’t expect this. The presenter continued to say how he has thousands satisfied clients and how he has been doing this for years. He didn’t do too bad to recover from this though!
Where To From Here?
Hmm.. we know that there are people out there giving bad advice and maybe even scamming to a degree. But to see one in action is a completely different thing. If you are looking for a SEO Consultant in the future, remember this story and don’t fall for BS.
